James Lundgren was born and raised in Minnesota. Growing up, visits to historic sites were a common activity for the family. He received a bachelor’s degree in American History and American Indian Studies from the University of Minnesota, and a master’s degree in Nonprofit Administration from Regis University. James has worked for museums and nonprofit organizations his entire professional career. He began his career working as a seasonal guide for the Minnesota Historical Society’s Historic Sites Division. After receiving his first degree he transitioned into program management and then museum administration. He has worked for several county historical societies as well as two national level museums in Minnesota and Ohio.

Having worked for several museums and historic sites along the banks of the Mississippi River, James has developed a strong connection to the Mississippi River, and coming to Hannibal was an easy transition. James was named the CEO/Executive Director in 2019. He enjoys being in America’s Hometown helping to educate people about the life and works of Mark Twain. James is active with several organizations in Hannibal.

In his free time, James is a historical reenactor. He volunteers with interpretation and event planning for numerous Midwest and National historic sites and is also a road cyclist.
