Typing, 1840s Style
Audio Transcript, voiced by Curator Henry Sweets
“When Sam Clemens was 11 years old, his father died. Shortly thereafter he was apprenticed to a newspaper. He learned to set type and spent hours in front of type cases picking up letters one at a time to spell words and form sentences and paragraphs. Here he learned spelling, punctuation, and grammar that served him well when he began writing, perhaps a better education that he would have had in school.”
