Two Men and a Baby

Audio Transcript, voiced by Curator Henry Sweets

“Rockwell visited the Mark Twain Cave one day and a guide suggested he come back that evening to make sketches with no visitors in the cave. That evening the guide walked him about a quarter of a mile to the Five Points intersection. As Rockwell started unpacking his tools, the guide said he would be back in a hour. ‘You are not going to leave me’ questioned Rockwell. The guide’s wife was expecting a baby and the guide wanted to be with her. Rockwell was left alone in the cave and when the guide returned had to be helped as his imagination had run wild, hearing noises and thinking desperadoes were in the cave. The finished painting does reflect the water-formed passages with horizontal ledges, not the fanciful drawings of artists before him.”
