Twain’s Guide to Sneaking Out

“Mark Twain wrote in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that Tom was called by Huckleberry Finn late one evening to go a cemetery at midnight to try to cure Huck’s warts. In the book Tom ‘was dressed and out of the window and creeping along the roof of the ‘ell’ on all fours … then jumped to the roof of the woodshed and thence to the ground.’ There was a one-story addition on the back of the home, the roof of which was under the boys’ bedroom. With the large stone wall here there was not space here to reconstruct the ‘ell’ and the woodshed, but the brick pattern hints at their presence.”
