Sculptor & Neurosurgeon
Audio Transcript, voiced by Curator Henry Sweets
“In 1994, a letter arrived which started ‘I am a neurosurgeon and a Portrait Sculptor. I am sending, by air express, my heroic bronze bust of Mark Twain to the Mark Twain Museum as a gift.’ Two days later a truck arrived with a 375-pound package, this bust and stand.”
“Emil Seletz practiced neurosurgery for 51 years, performing his last brain surgery at age 83. He was an accomplished sculptor and sculpted after surgery to relax and unwind. During his career, he completed more than 60 heroic busts including one of Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington DC, and a series of more than 20 classical composers.”
