“One side of this duplex was home to Sophia Hawkins and her children. Anna Laura Hawkins was two years younger than Sam Clemens and a frequent playmate. Laura was identified as the model for Becky Thatcher by Mark Twain. Laura married Dr. James Frazer and lived in the Hannibal area the rest of her life. After her husband’s death, Laura became matron for the Home of the Friendless, an orphanage in Hannibal.”
