Big Head or Big Ego?

Audio Transcript, voiced by Curator Henry Sweets

“In 1935, sculptor Walter Russell planned six statue groupings to be made larger than life size to portray characters from Mark Twain’s works. A model of one of these groupings is on display in the museum’s Interpretative Center. This bust of Mark Twain’s head is in the size intended for the groupings. Due to the high cost in the middle of the Great Depression, the final bronze statues did not materialize.”
