A First For Any Illustrator

Audio Transcript, voiced by Curator Henry Sweets

“In his autobiography, Norman Rockwell recounted: ‘I can remember how really thrilled I was when, in 1935, George Macy, the publisher of the Heritage Press and Limited Editions Book Club books, asked me to illustrate Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.’ Rockwell read the books and made eight preliminary drawings for each. Then he did something no other artist had done – he traveled to Hannibal to look things over. His visit changed the settings for several of the illustrations as he matched what he found on that trip. He produced eight color illustrations for each book along with black and white sketches for each chapter.”
