The Mark Twain Museum hires part-time seasonal employees each year as sales clerks for the three gift shops as well as admission clerks for the two admission desks. Occasionally, we also hire professional staff. All current job openings will be posted on this site.

Executive Director – Job Description

Executive Summary:

The Mark Twain Home Foundation (MTHF), is guided by its mission statement to promote awareness and appreciation of Mark Twain and his literary works and demonstrate the relevance of his stories and ideas to citizens of the world.  The Foundation realizes its mission through operation of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum, including its collections, educational programs, and outreach. The museum properties, which include 8 buildings, house a wealth of Samuel Clemens (known around the world as Mark Twain) artifacts, including the boyhood home, a national historic landmark.  Visitors from around the world come to the museum to experience the place that inspired so many of Twain’s timeless stories.

Position-Specific Challenges:

The executive director serves as the chief executive officer of the Mark Twain Home and Museum with primary responsibility for managing all major functions of the institution, including administration, development and fundraising.  Fund raising is the first and foremost responsibility. The Executive Director reports to, and works in partnership with, the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities:

To achieve the organization's mission the Executive Director will implement and

conduct fundraising programs to provide annual and campaign support, increase  visibility and enhance the image of the museum locally, nationally and internationally, provide leadership for Museum staff and constituencies, and manage financial operations of the museum.  Specific duties include:

Development and Fundraising

  • Manage ongoing fundraising and development activities
  • Design and implement programs to increase and diversify the base of financial support, including private contributions and earned income
  • Manage or oversee all capital campaign activity, including but not limited to, prospect identification and research, development of support materials, cultivation and solicitation efforts, and recognition activities

      Leadership and Management

  • Ensure regular strategic and annual planning
  • Oversee all programs and activities to meet annual goals and objectives
  • Provide support for the Board of Directors and relevant committees
  • Supervise implementation of the Master Plan (renovation and construction activity)
  • Supervise professional staff
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key constituencies through active involvement in community programs and events
  • Maintain contact with a national network of organizations dedicated to preserving and interpreting the life of Mark Twain

Financial Administration

  • Prepare annual budget to be approved by the Board of Directors
  • Oversee budget administration

Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have at minimum a 4year degree in non-profit management, business, museum studies or related field. Senior level management experience in nonprofit fiscal management including fund accounting and budgeting preferred.  Candidate will also have proven ability to raise funds and identify, cultivate, and solicit major donors and other sources of revenue (experience in capital campaigns a plus).  Must have excellent communication, leadership and organizational skills.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The museum relies on the help of its volunteers to give our visitors a wonderful experience while at the museum. Volunteer opportunities include working both with visitors and helping behind the scenes. We have many different volunteer positions for all different interests and talents.

All of the opportunities help improve the quality of our museum. We would love to have you be a part of the museums' vibrant volunteer program!

A Sampling of Available Volunteer Job Opportunities

Job Title: Collections cataloging assistant

Purpose of Job

To assist the museum curator in transferring and/or entering objects in the museum's collection into an updated collections database.

Job Description

A collections cataloging assistant will work directly with the museum collection, in some cases measuring, photographing and/or writing descriptions of the objects. Other objects will require data entry into the museum's new cataloging program, PastPerfect.

Job Title: Interpretive Center Volunteer

Purpose of Job

To provide a welcoming, comfortable environment and a rewarding educational experience to visitors of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum. Volunteers are the public face of the Museum. Without dedicated volunteers, the Museum could not offer the quality experience our visitors deserve. We want our visitors to have a pleasant experience. You are a big part of making this happen!

Job Description

An Interpretive Center Volunteer will assist visitors in the Interpretive Center. Duties may include: greeting visitors, answering visitor questions, directing visitors to other buildings, marking visitor tickets, supervising exhibit floor, assisting staff as needed.
